3 Day Expeditions

In the Family Islands or Barnard Islands

Imagine a deserted, tropical island paradise just a short paddle off the coast. Idyllic white sandy beaches, warm waters, great cuisine and good company. Welcome to our popular 3 day expedition. Depending on weather conditions and group dynamics we have two exciting destinations on offer for our 3 day programs; the Family Island Group or the Barnard Island Group. Both island groups are national park islands within the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park and both are amazing places to explore by kayak.

Situated just off the coast of Mission Beach, the Family Island Group consists of 11 lush tropical islands surrounded by the clear blue waters of the Coral Sea.  The waters abound with marine life and we will watch for turtles and dugongs as we kayak. Snorkelling on the fringing reefs from the island beaches offers the opportunity to see an array of colourful tropical fish and corals. The day’s activities consist of approximately 3-4 hours of sea kayaking through the islands, allowing plenty of time to explore the rainforest and snorkel over the colourful coral reefs, or just relax and enjoy the peace and tranquility of such a stunning, natural environment.  From mid July until late September we look out for the majestic humpback whales, which visit these waters and we often have the awe inspiring opportunity to kayak with these giants of the sea, an enriching experience that will stay with you for life.

Lying just further north are the Barnard Islands, similar to the Family Islands.  These islands offer a great paddling option if the conditions are breezy, and are a bird watcher’s paradise being a major nesting site for several species of terns and many other sea birds. In the evenings we enjoy a glass of wine and watch the sunset, before tucking into a delicious dinner under a canopy of stars. Our 3 day expeditions are a relaxing and rewarding way to explore and experience a beautiful part of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park.

7 Day Hinchinbrook Island Expedition

Wow ! Is often people’s reaction to this place. Our 7 day Hinchinbrook Expedition is our flagship trip and one of the worlds best sea kayaking journeys.  Imagine an island paradise lying off the North Queensland coast where towering mountains give way to pristine rainforest fringed by white, sandy beaches and warm, azure waters, on this island your footprints will be the only prints on the beach. Hinchinbrook Island is Australia’s largest island national park. It’s as wild and untouched today as it was when the native Bandjin people used it as a seasonal hunting ground or when James Cook sailed along its coast in the Endeavour and named many of its features.

On our 7 day expedition we paddle north from the small town of Lucinda out and along the beautiful east coast of Hinchinbrook island camping on secluded beaches, swimming in idyllic, clear fresh water holes and eating like royalty.  Each day allows for just the right amount of activity as we paddle to the next stunning campsite. Its not all rush rush like many expedition trips and most days allow for some island time in the afternoon to chill out or go for a walk, a snorkel or just relax in a hammock. Each evening ends with a glass of wine and a gourmet meal cooked by our skilled guides who are just as handy with a chef’s knife as they are with a paddle. All served up in natures restaurant, arguably some of the best alfresco dinning available.

After we reach the northern end of Hinchinbrook we begin island hopping. Our first stop is the tranquillity of Goold Island where we camp with beautiful views of the Family Islands to the north and the towering peaks of Hinchinbrook to the south.  From Goold we continue north to picturesque Wheeler Island one of the Family Island group. We spend our last night here before paddling to Dunk Island for our final lunch. From there it is a short paddle back to mainland Australia where we make landfall at South Mission Beach and end our trip.

The 7 day Hinchinbrook trip is an unforgettable kayaking journey through pristine, tropical islands. This trip is renowned among sea kayakers and adventurers. Hinchinbrook Island only gets exclusive visitors because of a regulated permit system and we are the only commercial operator. We run small group trips to ensure quality experiences and environmentally sustainable practices. Due to this, trips often sell out quickly so book now to avoid disappointment.
